1. In Writing about Literature, study the Additional Concepts for Poetry. [These should be on pages 32-36.] Pay special attention to the explanation of "Sonnet."

2. Shakespeare, "Sonnet # 73" (Click here for a copy of the Sonnet.) 
Study Questions:
1) Is this an Italian or an English sonnet?  Justify your choice, by explaining how the rhyme scheme and internal structure are either Italian or English.
2) What is the major idea of each part of the poem? 3) Could the parts of this sonnet be put in a different order? Why, or why not? 4) To whom is the speaker speaking? 5) What is the theme of the poem?

3. Gerard Manley Hopkins' "God's Grandeur"
Study Questions: Is this an Italian or an English sonnet? Justify your choice, by explaining how the rhyme scheme and internal structure are either Italian or English.
Paraphrase the poem. What is the major idea of each part of the poem? What is the theme of the poem?
