The KISS Approach to Sentence Structure
-- by Dr. Ed Vavra

Constructions Ignored by KISS Grammar

The KISS approach attempts to enable students to understand (consciously) and be able to dicuss sentence structure. To date, NO other approach, traditional or modern, has reached this objective. But in order to succeed, concepts must be held to a minimum. The following concepts are therefore ignored by the KISS approach. Some of them need to be taught; others can probaby be left to the grammarians and linguists.

Interrogatives

Every pre-schooler knows how to form questions, so the KISS approach simply considers interrogatives  as adverbs. (Why make things difficult?)

Possessive Nouns

Possessive nouns always function as adjectives, and thus there is no need to consider them as a separate category if one's objective is to look at the larger aspects of sentence structure. At some grade level, of course, students should learn about possessive nouns -- and how to use an apostrophe to form them.

Pronouns

Because students have problems with both pronoun reference and agreement, at some point students should learn to recognize pronouns and use them correctly. But because pronouns function in the same way that nouns do, the concept of "pronoun" is not really necessary for the discussion of sentence structure.
