Seeking Samples of Students' Writing

In learning how to teach grammar, teachers really need to work with samples of writing comparable to that of the students whom they will teach. I am therefore looking for at least two or three samples of the writing of students at every grade level from three through twelve. Ideally, samples would be between 250 and 300 words. Younger students rarely write that much at one time, but several smaller pieces can be put together as a collection. For this project, samples will be edited by me and posted as an exercise with the student's name, city, and state. Both handwritten and typed copies are acceptable. DOS-compatible disk versions would be appreciated. To be considered, samples must be accompanied by this release form.

Samples solicited in this way will probably attract the work of above-average writers. To provide teachers with still better preparation, and to improve the teaching of grammar in general, I am also looking for sets of samples from all the students in, if possible, an average classroom -- in each grade level. These samples will be used anonymously and will not be editied. These sets will give teachers both a better sense of the grammatical problems they will meet in their classrooms, and (if I am any good) a better understanding of how to help students' solve those problems. These sets will be posted in Cobweb Corner (my research area) with links to them from this course site. If you are interested in helping to collect these sets, please contact me at evavra@sunlink.net.
