Glencoe/Glencoe English/Story Settings P. 72////E8N4/ ***** Narrative writing tells stories. A good story usually

presents many details that help the readers to feel involved in

what is happening. To help the readers understand where the

story takes place and who the characters are, a story often

includes several paragraphs of description. The time and place of a story are called the story setting.

The setting can be an essential part of a story. The setting can

determine what kind of characters will be in the story. The

setting can determine the specific problems the characters will

face. Often, the setting is described at the beginning of a

short story."WORKING WITH THE MODEL Read the following paragraph. It describes the setting for

a short story. May had broken cold and gray, exceedingly cold and gray.

The man turned from the main Yukon trail and climbed the high

earth bank, where a dim and little traveled trail led eastward

through the spruce timberland. It was a steep bank. He paused

for breath at the top, excusing himself by looking at his watch.

It was nine o'clock. There was no sun nor hint of sun, though

there was not a cloud in the sky. It was a clear day and yet

there was a pall over the face of things, a subtle gloom that

made the day dark, and that was due to the absence of the sun.

The man flung a look back along the way he had come. The Yukon

trail lay a mile wide and hidden under the three feet of ice.
