"DEVELOPMENT

 

Statements follow a few different patterns. Each patternhas certain kinds of words in a certain order.

The sentences at the beginning of this lesson are examplesof the simplest sentence pattern. This pattern has only twobasic sentence parts:

 

Subject Noun or Pronoun + Verb or Verb Phrase

 

Identify the subject noun or pronoun of the followingsentences.

Identify the verb or verb phrase of each sentence.

 

1. Breezes blow. 3. Tides have changed. 5. They are wading.

2. Water sprays. 4. She is fishing. 6. Fog is coming.

 

Other words and word groups, such as adjectives, adverbs,and phrases, may be added to the sentence pattern. The otherwords add more information, but they do not change the pattern ofthe sentence.

 

Identify the subject noun or pronoun of the followingsentences.

Identify the verb or verb phrase of each sentence.

 

1. We run happily into the cool water.

2. A huge wave is rising in front of us.

3. We dive under it at the last moment.
