Notes 1. Don't expect students at this level to be able to identify the complement of "day is." If they ask, tell them that the complement is the rest of the sentence, and that it consists of clauses, which they will study later (Level Three). 2. Some students will want to make "this" the direct object of "I know." Point out that, within this sentence, the answer to the question "I know what?" is not "this," but rather "this isn't very bad." Then note that "this isn't very bad" is a clause, and that they will study clauses later. 3. I can still remember
by eighth grade teacher screaming that "mad" means "crazy," and that this
should be "angry." Such prescriptivism, which runs counter to general usage,
is part of what gives grammar a bad name.
