Notes 1. Don't expect students to be able to identify clauses as complements. That will come in Level Three. 2. The subject of "did stop" will cause confusion. Simply don't expect students to be able to explain it. Tell them that the subject is a clause "Whoever hit Frackles," and that they will be studying clauses at the next level. 3. The "lie"/"lay" distinction is one that many of my college Freshmen still have trouble with. KISS, of course, is primarily concerned with syntax, not usage, so it would be up to individual teachers and school systems to decide when to attempt to deal with this problem. 4. I am saving the repeated "pretty and
SLIM" to be counted as appostives, but fifth graders would probably accept
them as repeated predicate adjectives.
