Compound Main Clauses (Ex # 1): from
Stories of Robin Hood Told to the Children
by Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall
Analysis Key

1. It was a fair fight (PN), | and you have won the battle (DO). |

2. My name is John Little (PN), | and I promise to serve you [#1] faithfully. |

3. {At last} all the buckets were empty (PA), | and the christening was over. |

4. Robin lay still {for a short time}, | and Little John knelt {beside him}. |

5. He tried to raise himself [#2] {to the window}, | but he had not strength (DO). |

Notes
1. "You" is the direct object of the infinitive "to serve." The infinitive phrase functions as the direct object of "promise."
2. "Himself" is the direct object of the infinitive "to raise." The infinitive phrase functions as the direct object of "tried." [Until students get to infinitives, I would accept both "promised to serve" and "tried to raise" as the finite verb phrases.]
