Analysis Key

1. This "when" clause can be viewed as adjectival to "times' and/or adverbial to "was."
2. "Engine" is the direct object of the verbal (infinitive) "to work." The infinitive phrase functions as the direct object of "might try."
3. KISS explains this clause as an interjection. See KISS Level 3.2.3 - Interjection? Or Direct Object?
4. I would explain "thanks" as a noun used as an adverb, but I'm fairly certain that some grammarians would have other explanations.
5. The verbal (infinitive) "to see" functions as an adverb to "plain."
6. "Inclosed" (so spelled in the original)  is a verbal (gerundive) that modifies "Mediterranean."
7. The verbal (infinitive) "to avoid" functions as the direct object of "wished."
