Multiple Ways of Combining Sentences
Exercise # 5
Write your answers on separate paper.

The Original Sentences:

The biggest selling beer on the market is Budweiser, it is probably in 90% of every household in the United States.

[In addition to the original comma splice, note the other logical problem in this sentence.]

Combining Using Main Clauses

1. Combine the two sentences using a colon, semicolon, or dash. Briefly explain why you used the punctuation mark that you chose. [You may, if you wish, write only those parts of the sentence that would be changed.]

Combining Using Subordinate Clauses

Use a subordinate conjunction to combine the two sentences to establish the indicated logical connection and focus.

2 [Focus on "is probably in 90%"; logical connection = cause/effect]

3 [Focus on "is probably in 90%"; logical connection = identity: make the other clause an adjective]

4 [Focus on "is Budweiser"; logical connection = identity: make the other clause an adjective]

Combining Using Gerundives

5 Reduce the subordinate clause in (3) to a gerundive.

6 Reduce the subordinate clause in (4) to a gerundive.

Combining Using Appositives

7 Reduce the gerundive in (5) to an appositive.

8. Reduce the gerundive in (6) to an appositive.
