High School Graduates' Understanding of Revision and Editing

For the last couple of decades, the focus of writing instruction, in high schools as well as in colleges, has been on writing as a process. What the writing process is, and how it works, and how different writers use different processes, can become complex questions. There is, however, general agreement that two distinct stages in (or parts of) the process are "revision" and "editing." Writers can, of course, revise and edit without knowing that they are revising and editing, i.e., there is a difference between doing something and knowing the name for what one is doing. But like many of my colleagues in the teaching of college composition, I have the sense that students do not, and do not know how to, revise. Since these skills are supposedly being taught in high schools, I wondered what my students have learned before they reach me. Before doing any instruction, I asked the students in my college Freshman composition course to explain, in a sentence or two, the difference between revising and editing. These are all the responses from the students in two sections.

the difference between editting and revising is that editing is that editing is the removal ofwords or phrases or punctuation and revising is not actually removal of something but changing it to better understand and easier to comprehend.

*

Editing is the process of taking out, eliminating, or adding new things. Revising is reading through something and changing ideas around. Editing is repositioning large phrases or sentences, while revising is repositioning small phrases.

*

When you edit ou make a print of what you did. When you revise you read over your work and correct your mistakes. So you revise your work before you edit it.

*

Editing: The process where a written work is condensed or changed to improve qualioty in the eyes of the editor.
Revising: The writer would make changes to the document or article after re reading a draft to correct punctuation spelling etc. The author might change the way it is written to improve quality or content.

*

Editing is when you take out parts of your writing assignment that you do not want to read. Revising is making changes that will help your writing assignment better. Change parts that you don't like.

*

Editing in my mind would be, after you write the paper you would edit it. Editing would be the act of re-working your first thoughts into a more gramatically correct paper.

*

Editing -- when you view your paper for mistakes & correct them.
Revising -- when you rewrite using the edited version.

*

The difference between these two things is, Editing is going through your paper and making sure the you have all the spelling, puncuation, and other grammar correct. Revising is making sure everything sounds right.

*

Editing ?    Revising

*

When you edit you go through & look for mistakes when you revise you go through & add or up date your not looking for errors

*

The difference between editing and revising is while editing you actually change the problems in a paper or presentation. While revising is just crossing off bad ideas and relocating sentences or fragments into the margins.

*

Editing is taking out the mistakes one has put in a paper. For example, spelling errors or gramatical errors. Revising is when not only one fixes these mistakes but tries to make his or her paper better as a whole.

*

Editing is making changes in some type of writing. Revising is making corrections such as misspelled words and run on sentences. Editing could be a big change and revising could be a small correction.

*

The difference between editing and revising is that in editing, you simply read through a piece of writting and look for grammatic mistakes. In revising, you change the content of parts in the writting. That is the difference between editing and revising.

*

Revising is anothe rstep of the writing process. It is when you brainstorm for other ideas to include and incorporate into your work. Basicaly it's a bunch of ideas floating in your head.
Editing is when mistakes are to be corrected. Punctuation, spelling, ect. should all be looked for. In editing, the body of your work does not actually change.

*

Edit -- to correct or alter someone elses work
revise -- to correct or alter your own work

*

Editing is looking over and giving ideas to a piece of work in order for that information to be changed and be more understandable and effective.
Revising occurs when those ideas that came from editing are put to use to change and improve a piece of work.

*

Editing a paper is when you check the spelling, punctuation, proper writing techniques and correct all your mistakes.
Revising is when you look over it one last time and maybe someone else can read it as well.

*

The difference between editing & revising is that editing is the process of going through & checking spelling, pronunciation, grammer, etc. Revising, however, is the act of bringing information up to date & easier to understand, clarifying it.

*

Editing is when you take something out that you wrote because you didn't like it. Revising is when you take something that you wrote and change it around to make it sound better. These are the differences between editing and revising.

*

Editing -- checking for errors and removing unwanted information.
Revising -- checking material for antiquated information and updating the material to present needs.

*

editing -- is corrent any sentence grammer & mis spelled words.
revising -- it is a rough copy that you rearange to get your final draft.

*

When revising you look over the paper for mistakes, and for better ways of stating things. When editing you actually fix your mistakes and things are stated differently.

*

I believe editing to be used mainly on finished papers and books. The changes on the finished product is editing. Revision is changes done on work in progress.

*

When Revisingt a paper, you are going over your work, checking for any mistakes. When editing a paper you are taking out parts you do not want anymore, as well as adding peices not previously considered.

*

Editing is changing a few things in a writing while retaining the major idea. Revising is making many changes which may change the main idea.

*

Editing is the making of corrections of words, sentences and puncuation.
Revising is skimming to see what has to be changed to start editing. Look over.

*

Editting is when you go through your paper & fix your grammar, spelling, & sentence structure
Revising is when you make your paper sound good.

*

Revising is to look through a text to find grammer mistake and to edit is to change parts of a text to allow it to flow better.

*

In my opinion, editing is a way of taking a paper or a paragraph and making changes in the text. Making changes also to sentence structure and punctuation. Revising would be taking a paper you produced, then changing and taking out, and adding sentences or paragraphs of information.

*

The difference between editing and revising is; editing is when you proof read something that you have written or someone else has written and you correct misspelled words, punctuation and other grammer mistakes. Revising is when you change your sentences and paragraphs so they make more sence.

*

I am not compleatly sure what the difference is but I'll tell you what I think. Editing is fixing the gramer and spelling to improve the work. Revising is changes sentences and paragraphs.

*

Editing is the process of finding mistakes in a work and correcting those mistakes. Revising, on the other hand, is changing or updating a work to suit a certain criteria. Editing is done on

*

The difference between editing and revising is that editing a paper is when you look at the structure of the paper. While editing you make take something out, change something, or put something in. Revising a paper is when all mistakes are found inside the paper and you correct them.

*

The difference between editing and revising is that when editing you correct mistakes made on the rough draft. Mistakes including grammar, spelling and such.

*

Revising and editing a different and do not mean the same thing. First of all when you revise you can change the whole layout of the paper. When you edit you just change small items.

*

In both editing and revising a paper, article, etc. you make changes. Editing is when you make changes to the articles, paper etc. involving grammar, punctuation, etc. . When you revise a paper you update the information that you already have.

*

I would say editing is the process of looking for errors in a text. Revising would be the act of fixing those errors.

*

Editing is to go through the paper and make corrections on it. You would make sure that there is no errors through it. Revising is to go through a paper and change a few things so that it may make more sense. You wouldn't change alot, just enough so that it sounds better.

*

When you edit something you check your writing for mistakes and when you revise something you change it entirely.

*

Editing -- is making actual changes to something
revising -- is checking a work that has been done and editing it to make a better piece.

*

Editing is checking a paper before it gets handed in and corrected, fix grammer and punctuation mistakes.
Revising is changing a paper after it has been corrected, fix it up so it is correct.

*

The difference between editing and revising is that editing means if you edit something you are changing certain things in what you have written. When you are revising something you are just reading over it quickly looking over what you have written.

*

When someone edits they take things out and may or may not use them later. When someone revises they are improving on the paper for the final copy. These are the differences between editing and revising.

*

When you edit a paper your reading over the paper you have done. When editing you are finding mistakes that were made while writing. Revising a paper you are fixing the mistakes that were found during the editing of the paper.

*

When you revise something like a paper you read it over and make any changes that you feel you should in order to make it sound better (mostly wording) as far as the way you want it. In editing, I think it is more in checking of the spelling, punctuation and grammer errors; which anyone can help you with or do for your paper.

*

Editing -- involves making changes
Revising -- involves reconsidering every aspect

*

The difference between editing and revising is that editing is pointing out and correcting mistakes in english mechanics; revising is rewriting a section because the author is unsatisfied.

A few of these students understand the differences (even though some have the names backwards). It's also possible that some of the students can revise and edit, even though they can not explain the difference (or don't know the names). But I have to wonder if we can teach students to do something (revise) without telling them what we want them to do (i.e., without using the name). And, if they don't know what we want them to do, it's little wonder that they don't do it.
