Joke # 2
Answer Key for Level 2
Because browsers cannot handle double underlining, subjects are in bold green; finite verbs, in bold blue. Complements are in bold dark red, with their labels after them.  The font size of words aleady analyzed has been decreased. Words which remain to be analyzed are still in black.

      A home-economics teacher was trying[CNE] to

encourage[Note #1] her  third-graders to try new foods. The

teacher had a piece (DO) {of venison,} which she cut up {into

little squares}. She placed the pieces (DO) {on spoons}and gave

them (DO) {to each} {of the children}.

"Now, boys and girls, the game we're going[Note #2]

to play today is to taste this new food, and to guess the name

{of the animal} {from which} this meat came," the teacher

said[CNE]. "I'll give you (IO) a hint (DO) -- it's a name (PN)

that sometimes your mommy calls your daddy (DO) when he

comes home {from the office}."

There[Note] was a long pause (PN). Finally a youngster

{in the back} exclaimed[CNE], "Don't[Note] eat it (DO)!"

Notes:

1. If you considered "was trying to encourage" as the finite verb, consider your answer as correct. (I'm playing this conservatively for the number count.)

2. First, if you did not consider "to play," as part of the finite verb, your answer is still correct. Second, note that there is a subject and its finite verb ("we're going to play") between a subject ("game") and its verb ("is"). [I hope you got that part correct. ;) ] Third, the complement of "is" is obviously "to taste," but we have not gotten to infinitives yet, so you were expected to miss this.
