1.      I have put most of the basic instructional material in one MS Word document titled Writing Papers for College. Click here to get it. Read and take notes on:
a.) "Background Material" (pp. 2-7).
b.) "Writing as a Process and Product" through "Thesis (pp. 8-21)
Suggestion: This is a fair amount of reading, but you are not expected to remember or understand all of it. The best way to read it is to print it out and then read with a pencil or pen in your hand. Underline important ideas and put question marks in the margin wherever you want more explanation. Use your question marks to:

2. Read They Say/I Say, pages 28 - 38 (Chapter 2)

3.Review the Assignment and Grading Sheets  for MP # 2. After your question (See # 5), write a controversial topic that you are thinking about using. After the topic, list two smaller issues in it. (You should be able to do this even if you have not yet found many sources.)

4. Study Syntax Assignment 1 (S/V/C) and do the Exercise.

5. Bring a specific, written relevant question about this assignment to class.

2. Grading Two Essays 
     Look up the meanings of the adjectives "abstract" and "concrete." (You can use the online Webster's Dictionary.)
     Next, print out and read the following two short essays written by students on the distinction between abstract and concrete words
