Level 1: Prepositional Phrases

Current technology makes it extremely difficult to draw lines, etc. from word to word in web documents. In Level One, I have therefore indicated words modified by prepositional phrases in following brackets. These brackets will be deleted in the answer keys to subsequent levels.

     There are five people {in my family} [Adverb to "are" or 

Adjective to "people"] my mom, my dad and my two brothers 

their names are Ray and Paul.  I live {at 328 Sandy Dr.} 

[Adverb to "live" ] First I think I will start {with my dad.} [Adverb

to "will start" ] My dad works {at Optimal Arts.} [Adverb to 

"works"] He travels pretty much. He goes all {over the 

place} Note #1 asking {for money} [Adverb to "asking" Note #2]

{for his company.} [Adverb to "asking" or Adjective to "money"] My 

dad's name is Bill. I will talk {about my mom.} [Adverb to 

"will talk"] Well she is pretty tall and she is also pretty. Everyday

she stays home and watches my brother {except when he goes

{to preschool.} [Adverb to "goes"]} [Adverb to "watches" Note #3]

My mom's name is Sarah. I will talk {about my big brother.} 

[Adverb to "will talk"] He likes to play golf a lot. His best is an 

eighty-two {on eighteen holes} [Adverb to "is" or Adjective to

"eighty-two"] And that is good {from the men's tee's.} [Adverb to

"is"] My brother is 13 His name is Ray. Now my little brother 

Paul. He can be a really pain sometimes. Like when I am 

talking {on the phone} [Adverb to "am talking"] and sitting {on 

the sofa} [Adverb to "sitting"] he starts jumping {on the sofa} 

[Adverb to "jumping"] and I start bouncing up and down. But I

like him a lot. He is three years old. His name is Paul.

     I will talk {about myself.} [Adverb to "will talk"]  Well I 

like playing golf also. My best score {on eighteen holes} 

[Adjective to "score"] is an eighty-six {from the ladie's tee's.}

[Adverb to "is" or Adjective to "eighty-six"] That is really good {for 

me. [Adverb to "is"]My best {from the men's tee's} [Adjective to

"best" Note #4] {on nine holes} [Adjective to "best" Note #4] is a 

forty-six {on the hardest nine.} [Adverb to "is" or Adjective to 

"forty-six"] I am nine years old. 

     I will talk {about Dierdorf Pupper Walter.} [Adverb to "will 

talk"] Well he is a four legged creature He is a dog. He has 

brown and black fur. I like him a lot.  He is eleven years old. 

Yesterday was his birthday. My house is mosty made {of 

bricks} [Adverb to "is made"] and the other part is made {out of 

something else} [Adverb to "is made"] I don't know what it is 

though. 

     I live {at 423 Sandy Drive.} [Adverb to "live"] My house is 

pretty big. We have a big back yard. I have the biggest 

bedroom {in the house} [Adverb to "biggest"] {out of five 

rooms.} [Adverb to "biggest"] Our basement is big. We have a

pinball machine and a big ping-pong table. Most {of the time}

[Adjective to "most"] I stay downstairs. Because it is cool {down 

there.} [Adverb to "is"Note #5] After I come in when it is hot 

outside I go down {in the basement.} [Adverb to "go"] Then I 

get cold so I go upstairs. My brother's room is the second 

biggest {in the house.} [Adjective to ellipsed "room" or Adverb to 

"is"] My parent's room is {down the hall} [Adverb to "is"] when 

you walk in. My little brothers room is {in the hall} [Adverb to

"is"] also. So is the bathroom. We have a living room and a 

family room and a kitchen. Well that is all {about my house.}

Notes

1. See Note #5 for passage nine.

2. At level two, many students will prefer to see "asking for" as a verb, meaning "seeking."

3. Expect students to be confused by the "except" phrase. They will probably miss it until they get comfortable at level three (clauses).

4. The word "best" can be considered an adjective to an ellipsed "score," which would make the phrases adjectival to "score," or "best" can simply be considered a pronoun.

5. Some students may prefer to view "down" and "there" as adverbs. I would let them.
