Joke # 1: Answer Key for Level 1
Current technology makes it extremely difficult to draw lines, etc. from word to word in web documents. In Level One, I have therefore indicated words modified by prepositional phrases in following brackets. These brackets will be deleted in the answer keys to subsequent levels.

The dean {of women} [Adjective to "dean"] {at a large

coeducational college} [Note 1.] recently began an important

announcement {to the student body} [Adjective to

"announcement"] as follows:#2

"The president {of the college} [Adjective to "president"] and

I have decided to stop necking {on the campus."} [Adverb to

"stop"]

Baude's Handbook of Humor for All Occasions.
Compiled by Jacob M. Braude.
Englewood Cliffs: Prentice Hall, 1958. p.51

Notes

1. Some readers will want to take {at a large coeducational college} to either "dean" or "women" as an adjective, while a few might want to take it to "began" as an adverb. Any of the three explanations should be considered as correct, although a class might have an interesting discussion about the differences in meaning.

2. Because "follows" is not a noun or pronoun, "as follows" is not a prepositional phrase. [Don't worry, for now, about what it is -- concentrate on the prepositional phrases.
