Joke # 4: Answer Key for Level 1
Current technology makes it extremely difficult to draw lines, etc. from word to word in web documents. In Level One, I have therefore indicated words modified by prepositional phrases in following brackets. These brackets will be deleted in the answer keys to subsequent levels.

    The American government, {in studying the migratory

habits} [Adverb to "bands" Also see Note #1.] {of birds,} [Adjective

to "habits"]  bands them {with a metal strip} [Adverb to "bands"]

inscribed: "Notify Fish &  Wild Life Service, {*in*

Washington, D.C.}[Note #2]" The bands used to read,

"Washington Biological Survey," abbreviated {to "Wash.

Biol. Surv."} [Adverb to "abbreviated"]  The inscription was

changed {to the present one} [Adverb to "changed"]  shortly

after a farmer shot a crow and disgustedly wrote the U.S.

government:

"Dear Sirs: I shot one {of your pet crows} [Adjective to "one"]

the other day and followed the instructions attached

{to it} [Adverb to "attached"] and surved it. It was turrible.

You should stop trying to fool the people {with things}

[Adverb to "fool"] {like that."} [Adjective to "things"]

Notes

1. An equally correct answer would be "{in studying} the migratory habits." Please wait for an explanation until we get to level 4.

2. You can take "{*in* Washington, D.C.}" to "Service," as an adjective, or, if you don't like that, you can take it as an adverb to an ellipsed "is located" -- "Service, *which is located in* Washington, D.C.}." Note that we could do the same with the "D.C." -- "*in* Washington, *which is located in the* D*istrict of* C*olumbia*." For my taste, that is too much explanation for something that is obvious, but it is your choice.
