       Two pirates were reunited {after many years} {of 

terrorizing} the high seas. The one pirate looked to be[Note #1]

{in pretty bad shape}: he had a wooden leg (DO), a hook (DO)

{on his right hand}, and a patch (DO) {on his left eye}.

     "You look[CNE] like you've been having a rough time 

(DO). What happened?" asked[CNE] the first pirate.

     "Well," the pirate answered, "my leg got crushed when

a load {of cargo} shifted, and I had to get a wooden leg (DO)

My hand got caught {in the chain}  as the anchor was being 

dropped, and the day after I got my hook (DO), a fly

landed {on my nose}."

1. The easiest way of dealing with "looked to be" is to consider it as meaning "appeared."
