Practice Exercises on Syntax
[Return to ENL 111 Syntax Menu]

Some students, perhaps because of their previous experience with grammar, pick up the KISS Approach very quickly. Others have had problems and have sought additional instructional material. Unfortunately, the various instructional material on grammar can be very confusing, especially since different grammarians define grammatical terms differently. (See Essay # 4 in the Essays on Grammar.) Students who want extra help should therefore use the following exercises, based on jokes about children in church (courtesy of Dr. David Evans, of our Biology Department).
Because the answer keys explain the KISS analytical procedure for each sentence, you may find them to be very repetitive (and thus boring). The best way to use these exercises is to print out one of the "texts" (below) and analyze it as we analyze all the other texts. You can then review the corresponding answer keys, looking for the things you missed. This will enable you to follow the step-by-step explanations on what you missed, thereby skipping the repetitive explanations of what you already know.
Once you have completed these exercises, if you still want more practice, you can do similar exercises in the KISS Grammar Course. (The difference between these exercises and those in the grammar course is that these take you, step-by-step, through the analytical procedure. The Answer Keys in the course simply present acceptable answers.)
